The Palladium Cinema in downtown Srinagar is the subject of a new programme in the BBC radio series, The Museum of Lost Objects. The programme is presented by Kanishk Tharoor and produced by Maryam Maruf. It looks at the changing use of the building: cinema, political rallying point, interrogation centre, security forces bunker. Here's the link to the audio:

I went to this cinema in 1979 and saw a Bollywood historical drama. I recall there was a doorway on the right-hand side which had just a curtain to shut out the light and someone opened the curtain whilst the film was rolling- as the light flooded in there was an uproar and the person quickly dropped the curtain back and vanished. The audience took the film very seriously and there was lots of head shaking (see Michael Bates from 'It Aint half of Mum') when an emotional scene happened. It was my first visit to an Indian cinema and a very memorable occasion
