The Kashmir Oral History project www.kashmiroralhistory.org is an important new initiative to record the testimonies of Kashmiris about their past. Here's an account of the project and its goals from those who have established it - please give it your support:
The most profound and strongest bridge between societies and cultures across the world is the sharing of their history and their cultures. War, political unrest, armed insurgencies, and extremely stressful and unequal living conditions have manifested themselves in severe discontent and dissent all over the world. Kashmir Oral History (KOH) project is an ongoing collaborative effort initiated by a group of Kashmiris of various backgrounds: Dr. Sadaf Munshi is a professor of linguistics at the University of North Texas; Sualeh Keen is a creative writer and graphic designer; Ajay Raina is an independent filmmaker; and Anamika Mujoo Girottee has experience working with issues on social development and human rights. The project aims to document the individual narratives arising out of personal experiences and living memories of events leading to the armed conflict of Kashmir and the impact of these events on the lives of various people.
The conflict had an enormous impact on the lives of millions of people and its repercussions are being witnessed even today. These repercussions were manifold, and expressed themselves in the form of physical, emotional and psychological consequences. Loss of thousands of precious lives, impact of human rights violations, and forced displacement of people from their homeland – are among some of the many effects of the Kashmir conflict. The primary objective of this ongoing project is to document narratives by people of Kashmir who position themselves and others differently in the course of political processes and events. The idea is to not just document witness accounts and personal experiences of the subjects of (the Indian administered) state of Jammu & Kashmir, but also of other people, such as bureaucrats, employees of national organizations, migrant laborers and people of various backgrounds who have experienced or were impacted by these events to give a holistic picture.
We expect this project will help people of Kashmir, researchers and experts in moving towards a better understanding of the conflict and its many different facets.
